When physical demands are too high, the brain prioritizes basic motor control and postural balance. The student ends up feeling exhausted, frustrated, and disengaged before ever getting the chance to demonstrate what they know.

Practical Strategies and Advice for Teachers and Therapists

Spotting early signs of physical fatigue such as slumping, tool dropping, or task avoidance, allows us to intervene before burnout sets in. Educators and OTs can collaborate on simple, practical adjustments that preserve a student's mental bandwidth throughout the school day:

  • Optimize Posture First: Ensure the student's feet are flat on a footrest with hips, knees, and elbows supported at 90-degree angles. A stable core provides the physical foundation that frees up arm and hand control.

  • Narrow the Choices: Avoid wide-open, overwhelming instructions. Use structured choices, such as offering two specific color markers or multiple-choice answer tiles, to drastically reduce mental processing fatigue during motor tasks.

  • Pace and Alternate Tasks: Alternate high-demand physical tasks (like handwriting) with low-demand sensory or verbal activities to prevent physical burnout mid-morning.
